Our second annual list of the 50 leaders who can lead America’s best companies. By Diane Brady and Jenna McGregor with additional reporting by Ethan Steinberg and Anthony Tellez

With all the battles for talent in America’s corporate world, few are as fierce as the battle to find a great CEO. With the accelerating pace of change and increased demands on leaders, measuring success has become more complex.

And yet, as our second annual CEO Next List shows, the next generation of contenders to lead America’s biggest companies is looking strong. They have seen and led through ups and downs, financial crises and prosperity, transformative innovation and a pandemic that has changed the way we work and live. They are diverse, although diversification at the top of companies is frustratingly slow. And they embrace the human side of leadership as few of their predecessors have.

Newsroom will compile this year’s list of 50 executives poised for CEO jobs at large companies. Some are clear competitors within their own companies — a common feature in a year when fewer than 19% of newly hired CEOs were external candidates, up from 30% in 2019, according to Christ Calder Associates. Others are entrepreneurs who worked their way up to C-suite roles or held roles of their own that weren’t typically a stepping stone to the CEO job. (To understand why, read our look at what skills and background boards are in demand now.)

We focused on those who would lead large US companies, as this role carries special powers and responsibilities. Business giants have the scale and reach to affect the lives of millions of people, for better or worse. The way these leaders build their products, treat their people, and manage their businesses can set a new gold standard for accountability, sustainability, and success—or undermine trust, prosperity, and the planet.

Over the past two years, many board members and CEOs have focused on navigating their businesses through the global pandemic and rising inflation, and reduced corner office sales. But as those storms begin to calm, inheritance rates rise again, making way for another generation. (See our exclusive look at new CEO succession dates here.) Here are 50 contenders that many experts believe are best suited to navigate the rough waters of the future.
