The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) is the professional body for surgeons. The College has a variety of functional departments, including a variety of surgery, medical, and other medical modalities. The main campus is on Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, within the Doctor’s Hall, designed by William Hry Playfair, and adjacent buildings. The main campus includes a skills laboratory, Doctors Hall Museum, medical and surgical libraries, and a hotel. A second office was opened in Birmingham (UK) in 2014 and an international office was opened in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2018.

The RCSEd has members and colleagues across the UK and the world, covering a number of disciplines, including surgery, dtistry, perioperative care, pre-hospital care, and remote, rural and community health care. Most of its members in England are based in England with others throughout Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Its membership includes people at all stages of their careers, from medical students to trainees, consultants, and retirees.
The Council is the governing body of RCSEd, and looks after the professional needs of the College’s membership. Decisions made by the Council formulate policy and direct the College in its mission to promote the highest standards of surgery. As a charity, Board Members are members of the College’s Trustees. The council consists of five officers, 15 elected members, one trainee member and the Dean of the Faculty of Pelvic Surgery.
In 1505, the Barber Surgeons of Edinburgh were officially incorporated as the city’s trade union, and this recognition was contained in the Seal of Honor (or Charter of Rights), which was granted to the Barber Surgeons by the Edinburgh City Council. On July 1, 1505.

In 1722 the Barbers were officially separated from the Surgeons Incorporation by order of the Court of Session to form the Edinburgh Barbers Association, which would exist until 1922.
The University of Edinburgh Medical School (founded 1726) and the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh were responsible for the rapid development in Edinburgh of systematic medicine education on a sound scitific basis. Surgery, however, is seen by many as a craft rather than a mental discipline, so members of the Incorporation of Surgeons took up the task of teaching and did much to establish Edinburgh’s reputation as a center of surgical learning. In 1778, King George III granted a new charter giving the medical body the title “Royal College of Surgeons of the City of Edinburgh”.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the College had outgrown the Hall of Surgeons and there was an urgent need to find a place to receive the large collection of anatomical and surgical specimens that had been presented to the College by Dr. John Barclay. The boarding school in Nicolson Street was purchased, and William Hry Playfair, 1790–1857, the leading Scottish architect of the time, was commissioned to design a building with an assembly hall, museum, classrooms, and library as the main building. The Doctor’s Hall was completed in May 1832, and was officially opened two months later.
In July 1905, the College celebrated the fourth anniversary of its incorporation, and as part of the celebration, awarded fellowships in honor of 36 of the world’s best surgeons. These include Lord Lister, the acknowledged Father of Modern Surgery, who became a Fellow in 1855. In 1955, on the 450th anniversary of the founding of the College, an honorary fellowship was conferred on His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, who. he had agreed to become the patron of the College earlier that year. The derelict property at Hill Place was provided for the college by Edinburgh District Council and completed in May 1981.
The College celebrated its quinctary in 2005 by opening a new skills lab and conference room, as well as its T Hill Place Hotel. Today, the College continues to serve its original role, continuing education, testing, and the advancement of medicine and surgery. In April 2014, the College opened a regional center in Birmingham to accommodate 80% of its UK membership based in England and Wales.
To be accepted as a member of the College, trainee surgeons must sit and pass the Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) examination, which usually takes place in the first or second year of surgical training. Since September 2008, the MRCS has been a student-centred examination, with a syllabus, format and content common to the three English Colleges (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Royal College of Surgeons of England, and Royal College of Physicians and Doctors of Glasgow) .

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh runs a wide range of educational activities and courses for medical students interested in surgery, to surgical trainees and consultant specialists. Most of these courses are held in the Surgical Skills Lab on site in Edinburgh, but the College also runs courses abroad.
It offers distance learning courses through its eLearning department. The Postgraduate Certificate in Remote and Offshore Medicine (CertROM) is an example of a course that consists mostly of online modules, although a diploma (DipROM) to workshop is also required.
The Dtistry has been an integral part of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since the Incorporation of Barbers was given the seal of approval by the City Council of Edinburgh in 1505, although it remained unorganized in Edinburgh until the mid-19th century. In 1879 the Lictiate Diploma in Dtal Surgery (LDS) was introduced and accepted for admission to the Dtist Register. In 1921, the Doctors Act raised the standard, and only doctors who had been trained in secondary school could be entered into the register and allowed to practice medicine.

Edinburgh Dental School became part of the University of Edinburgh in 1948 and graduates were awarded the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS). In the same year, the College introduced the Associate Diploma in Dental Surgery (FDSRCSEed). In 1982, Dental Surgery became a separate department within the College and continues to strive for education, training and maintenance of professional and ethical standards.
It is the largest branch of the College with 7,000 Fellows and Members worldwide and has its own Council. The Dtal Faculty portfolio has a wide range of exams and courses held in 17 countries around the world.
The Dtal Faculty Trainer was launched in 2016 by the Faculty of Dtal Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The Faculty’s mission is to improve palliative care and safety by promoting high standards of training in the dtistry and supporting practitioners in developing their roles. Faculty depends on all dtal team members.
The Faculty of Surgical Trainees is open to anyone interested in working or being involved in surgical training in the UK and abroad, regardless of college affiliation.

Faculty are available to all perioperative professionals, including trainees, such as: Medical Staff; First Assistant in Surgery; and all those who hold similar degrees in the delivery of advanced medical care.
Pre-hospital care is an established medical department, currently run by a variety of staff from first aid, paramedics, doctors, nurses, first responders, volunteer workers and remote medics including many agcy groups such as police, fire.
