OTAs that plan to “bridge” do not necessarily apply to bridging programs – they apply to traditional OT programs as well.

These bridge programs differ in what they offer. Factors to consider when evaluating a bridge program include the type of school the applicant attended and the type of accreditation the school has. Also, does the applicant already have a bachelor’s degree?

Most, if not all, bridge programs require weekend trips or lab visits, and even these vary from school to school, with location and distance being important factors to consider.

Whatever your reasons for considering a bridge program, there are important differences between the two positions. We all know the liability aspect of treatment planning, assessment and discharge and the huge amount of paperwork that comes with it. Keeping an OTA allows you to focus on treatment, as the burden of paperwork falls on the OT’s shoulders.

The authors of this article follow different career paths and have different reasons for enrolling in the OTA-to-OT Bridge Program. I (Quenton McCallister) wanted to be a hand therapist in my OTA program and I never stopped going to school after I started my OTA program.

Occupational Therapy Master’s Degree

My considerations when evaluating bridge programs are location and distance, tuition cost, and program duration. I chose Western New Mexico University because it was close to my home in Phoenix, allowing me to go to school on the weekends as needed. WNMU was also the first program I was able to start. At that point I was concerned that the requirements would change to the doctoral level.

I have a specific career goal in mind: to become a certified hand therapist. This was instrumental in my decision to connect as I needed to become an OT in order to become a certified hand therapist.

My colleague and co-author, Joseph Alva, was an OTA for 12 years before considering the MOT program. He didn’t want to start as a freshman and hadn’t considered the option before.

Alva’s anxiety continued to work while returning to school. WNMU enables this option by offering online and weekend classes. With the growing number of OTAs in the El Paso, Texas area facing declining salaries and limiting opportunities, Alva knew he had to start working on his goals. Her dream is to become an occupational therapist.

The transition was difficult at first, as studies shifted from theory-based practice to evidence-based research. But the fight with teammates and family paid off. Now at the pediatric clinic, Alva loves her new position in occupational therapy, allowing her to work more independently with care planning and increased independence with therapy.

After administering a questionnaire to a group of newly graduated OTs, I noticed some common trends. Most of them have no specific target on the bridge. However, they have specific career goals.

General topics such as requests for OT across the country, increased independence and responsibility, and increased pay are discussed. Many recent graduates have expressed a desire to participate in academia. Other reasons to enroll in a bridge program include becoming an independent contractor or startup
