NEW CUMBERLAND, PENNSYLVANIA — Chilean Lt. Gen. Cristian Roberto Guedelhoefer, Chile’s Defense and Military Attaché to the United States, traveled to New Cumberland to meet with the Security Assistance Command. His visit was an important event as the general became the highest-ranking Chilean to ever visit USASAC’s Pennsylvania office.

The primary reason for the General’s trip to USASAC was to celebrate the achievements of the current liaison officer for Chilean Security Support, Lt. Col. Gonzalo Tisi. Tisi successfully completed his service as a SALO officer and was honored during a USASAC retirement ceremony before officially returning home.

The visit also included a meeting by Guedelhoefer and his team with USASAC leadership to discuss specific security assistance issues for the Chilean program.

After touring USASAC facilities, the group discussed the SALO program. Terra Good, SALO program manager, discussed the benefits a country gains from a SALO and the role played by the Chilean SALO officer in his country’s current foreign military deals.

Chile, like many other countries participating in the SALO program, assigns an officer on a rotating basis. Once assigned to USASAC, the officer is granted access to US government systems that offer a real advantage in terms of tracking all related FMS cases. SALO assignments last at least 18 months and can last longer than three years.

Guedelhoefer traveled from Washington, D.C. to share his support by attending the farewell ceremony, and became the first 3-star general of a foreign military to attend his SALO officer’s farewell ceremony.

The general’s attendance was not surprising given the honored man. “Our SALO officers have a habit of becoming valued and loved members of our SALO community, and Gonzo [Tisi] was no different,” Good said.

“Lt. Col. Tisi has done an excellent job of representing his country and has worked to improve transparency and relations between the US and Chile regarding foreign military sales. The presence of Lieutenant General Guedelhoefer underscores the importance and value that a SALO adds to the FMS process.” Well said.

After the ceremony, Guedelhoefer spoke to several other SALO officers, took photos to commemorate the event, and offered a few kind words to the former Chilean SALO before departing for Washington.

Air Force General Lori Robinson, assuming command of the United States Northern Command, is snagging a higher post than any woman who has ever worn a uniform.

On May 13, Air Force Gen. Lori Robinson assumed command of the United States Northern Command, becoming the first female service member to lead a unified combatant command and the highest-ranking woman in US military history.

“She was chosen because she was the most qualified officer,” said Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, who attended the ceremony at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. “I hope the excellence she represents is an inspiration for women to join our armed forces.”

Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, is responsible for defending the American homeland and surrounding region. It also oversees the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD. As head of NORTHCOM, Robinson will be the overall supervisor of military activities in North America.

Robinson’s appointment to one of the highest positions in the US military may come as little surprise to those who have followed her meteoric career. According to Defense News, between June 2012 and October 2014, she rose from two-star service as deputy commander of U.S. Air Forces Central Command to four-star service as commander of the Pacific Air Forces, a role that made her the first female four . -Star to command combat troops.

Now Robinson is the highest-ranking female service member in our nation’s history. While women have previously achieved the rank of four-star rank — including Adm. Michelle Howard, who currently serves as the 38th deputy chief of naval operations — has never attained such high quarters as a unified combatant command like NORTHCOM.

In 2008, the now-retired General Ann Dunwoody broke the so-called “copper blanket” when then-President George W. Bush named her head of the US Army Material Command, making her the first four-star officer in the US.

“It’s an honor,” Robinson said at the ceremony. “I can think of no more sacred responsibility than defending the homeland. And to be able to do that and to be at that level of command is incredible.”

Being a commander is often a stepping stone to serving in the U.S. military’s top role, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, meaning Robinson, whose Air Force career began in 1982, could be the first woman to serve qualified for this post .Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Two soldiers who died during a medical evacuation for a unit of the 75th Air Force last summer.

Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville, a career aviator, presented Sgt. Armando Yanez and Sgt. Emmanuel Bynum with their awards at the Army Aviation Association of America Summit in Nashville, Tenn., the press release said.

It was July 12 and the two were part of an HH-60 Black Hawk medevac crew assigned to C Company, 6th Battalion, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division.

According to the press release, they came under small arms fire as the helicopter descended to exfiltrate a wounded soldier. Bynum guarded the helicopter while Yanez got out to get the soldier.

As they took off, Bynum said he saw one of the soldiers crawling on the ground with a gunshot wound.

The pilot refused to leave him, used a building to shield the plane from further fire, and then descended to an ad hoc landing zone to recover the second victim.

“The training I received helped me to be situationally aware of the landing zone environment,” Bynum said.

The Black Hawk leaked hydraulic fluid through gunfire, according to the press release, causing a dangerous landing situation that worsened the longer they waited to set the helicopter back down. However, the crew decided to take the injured to the hospital as soon as possible.

“I really want to say to his family and the US Army Rangers that I appreciate everything they are doing; these guys are heroes and warriors,” he added.

Bynum and Yanez originally received the Distinguished Flying Cross in January, but Maj. Gen. Randy George, commander of the US National Security Element – Afghanistan, recommended that they be upgraded.

“I started this morning thinking about our greatest generation and the heroes we have from WWII. I see the baton being passed from this generation to the young generation of today,” McConville said. “Every generation has its heroes, and today’s generation is no different.”
