Passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is an important milestone in your journey to becoming a pharmacy technician. Many employers prefer only certified candidates, but in many states, passing the PTCE is a prerequisite for employment as a pharmacy technician.
The PTCE exam is a computer-based exam consisting of 90 multiple-choice questions, including 10 unscored questions. Candidates are given one hour and 50 minutes to complete the exam, with an additional 10 minutes for study material and a post-exam survey. The results are based on the candidate’s answers to the 80 point test question. Unscored questions are not defined and are scattered throughout the test.
Before starting career training or certification preparation, it is important to know the certification requirements. To be eligible to take the PTCE, applicants must not have any criminal record, State Board of Pharmacy registration, or license transaction involving the applicant, and must not violate PTCE Certification policies, including but not limited to to the Code of Conduct. A high school diploma or its equivalent is also required.
If you pass the PTCE, you will be required to recertify every two years. To maintain certification and continue to use the CPhT designation, you must also complete 20 hours of continuing education within two years of certification or recertification and submit a recertification application with the appropriate fees.
